Cost drivers
Path and access
Open ceiling, hard lid, conduit, tray/J-hooks, riser, lift, occupied hours, infection control, exterior/underground and fire-rated assemblies change labor.
Media and application
Cat6, Cat6A, outside-plant copper, multimode/single-mode fiber, PoE loads, shielded environments, backbone distance and service loops require different components and practices.
Evidence and closeout
Permanent-link/channel certification, optical loss/OTDR as specified, labels, port schedules, drawings, photos, warranties and remediation must be explicit.
What a contractor should deliver
- Survey telecom rooms, racks, grounding, pathways, penetrations, distances, congestion and active-service constraints.
- Coordinate cable type, pathway fill, separation, supports, bend/pull limits, firestopping and manufacturer system requirements.
- Terminate and label both ends consistently with the approved administration scheme.
- Test with calibrated equipment to the named copper or fiber limits; remediate failures rather than averaging them away.
- Provide electronic test results, drawings, labels/port schedule, photos, warranty information and change record.
Abandoned cable and renovation
Removal scope should identify what is truly abandoned, protect circuits that remain, coordinate access and disposal, and update pathways/records. Never remove cable from appearance alone. Trace, label, validate with the owner, and preserve active life-safety, carrier, control and building systems.
