Authorized service and recovery guide

Paxton reader LEDs, Net2 database backup and system takeover

Troubleshoot from the credential and reader through wiring, controller, network and server. Preserve a working system before changing configuration, and use verified ownership procedures for lockouts.

Reader lights are evidence, not a complete diagnosis

Credential result

A normal red or green response can represent a system decision. Confirm the specific reader model and event log before interpreting color alone.

Communication or power

Alternating, persistent or abnormal LED behavior can involve reader wiring, voltage, controller state or communications. Use the exact product instruction and measure at the device.

Environment and mounting

Metal, adjacent readers, moisture, cable damage and incorrect grounding can affect read range and reliability without producing an obvious server fault.

Layered Paxton troubleshooting

  1. Record site, door, time, credential, observed lights/sounds and the corresponding event.
  2. Determine whether one user, one reader, one controller, one communications segment or the entire system is affected.
  3. Inspect door condition, lock power, request-to-exit, contact, tamper and life-safety interfaces.
  4. Check reader cable and voltage against the exact Paxton instruction; do not rely on color conventions from another model.
  5. Review controller LEDs, IP/RS-485 communications and server services without factory-resetting equipment.
  6. After correction, test authorized, denied, forced, held, schedule, outage and recovery behavior.

Net2 backup failure and database protection

Check Why it matters Safe evidence
Destination and free space A configured path can be unavailable, full or denied to the service account. Writable destination and successful dated backup
Service identity Interactive administrator access does not prove the Net2 service can write to the destination. Approved permissions without exposing passwords
Database health SQL/service trouble can affect backup and live operation. Service state, application events and Paxton-supported diagnostics
Recovery test A file existing is not proof it can support recovery. Documented restore validation in an approved environment

Paxton does not support hosting the Net2 database on a separate SQL server. Use the current compatibility guidance and involve the client’s Windows/network team where responsibilities cross system boundaries.

Authorized takeover checklist

  • Written client authorization, site identity and responsible stakeholders.
  • Existing administrator, installer, license, backup and equipment records where available.
  • Non-destructive inventory before any credential, controller or server change.
  • Paxton Support escalation for ownership or recovery questions.
  • Replacement and recommissioning plan if secure recovery is not possible.
